The Echinacea species are native to the Atlantic drainage area of the United States of America and Canada. They have been introduced as cultivated medicinal plants in Europe. Echinacea purpurea, E. angustifolia and E. pallida are the species most often used medicinally due to their immune-stimulating properties. This review is focused on morphological and anatomical characteristics of E. purpurea, E. angustifolia, E. pallida...
A new pseudoscorpion species, Roncus travuniensis sp. n. (Neobisiidae, Pseudoscorpiones), was collected in the Arenstorfova Pećina Cave, near Trebinje, Bosnia and Herzegovina. The main morphological traits of the specimen studied clearly demonstrate its affinities with Roncus vulcanius Beier, 1938. Additionally, some taxonomic and biogeographical traits of this new pseudoscorpion are also discussed.
Toxin B — trichothecene deoxynivalenol (DON) is the most frequent Fusarium mycotoxin in Fusarium head blight (FHB) disease produced by Fusarium fungi. Thirty-one samples of naturally cultivated winter wheat were collected from different localities in Slovakia and evaluated for DON content, and after an artificial inoculation twelve of winter wheat cultivars were evaluated for FHB, fusarium damaged...
Inflorescence structure and floral morphology has been studied in 19 accessions of C. quinoa. All the accessions show gynomonoecy and bear three basic flower types viz. hermaphrodite, chlamydeous female and achlamydeous female and number of types can be extended to five considering the size of flowers. Ten types have been classified on the basis of the proportion of hermaphrodite and female flowers...
The bacterial flora of the Oberea linearis (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae) was investigated and 13 different bacteria were isolated from O. linearis larvae. Seven of these bacteria were performed and characterized at species level and the rest of them were characterized at genus level. In this study, we determined morphological and physiological characteristics of the bacterial isolates by conventional...
Phytosociological characteristics and a rate of endangerment of the salt marsh vegetation in central and southern parts of the east Adriatic coast were studied. A total of 73 vegetation relevés were made and elaborated according to the standard procedures of the Braun-Blanquet method. Numerical analysis of the relevés and life forms was performed. Two associations of the class Arthrocnemetea-Puccinellio festuciformis-Arthrocnemetum fruticosi...
Short-and long-term oral exposures to boric acid (BA) in laboratory animals and birds caused toxic effects. However, the toxicity data on adult poultry skeletal muscles of BA was not documented with metabolic studies. Livability, weight gain, and feed conversion might be adversely affected in broilers as a result of changes in energy metabolism. Therefore, this study was conducted to investigate the...
Ten imidazole derivatives were tested for mutagenicity in Salmonella typhimurium strains TA98 and TA100 both in the absence and presence of metabolic activation by the microsomal fraction S9 mix. In a general manner, derivatives tested exhibited a greater mutagenic activity in the TA100 strain comparing to the responses in TA 98. In the standard plate incorporation assay, 8 of these substances (80%)...
The genus Acropsilus Mik, 1878 is reported from China for the first time. Seven species are described as new to science: Acropsilus guangdongensis sp. n., A. guangxiensis sp. n., A. jinxiuensis sp. n., A. luoxiangensis sp. n., A. yunnanensis sp. n., A. zengchengensis sp. n. and A. zhuae sp. n. A key is given to separate these Chinese species.
Orthopteroid assemblages (orders Orthoptera and Mantodea) were compared along moisture gradient at five sites of the Slovak Karst in southern Slovakia. A total of 40 species were recorded by sweep-net sampling. The occurence of each identified species varied with soil moisture and other factors. Sites with similar moisture conditions tend to have similar assemblages. No species occurred simultaneously...
In this study, Ca oxalate crystals were isolated from the leaves and X-ray diffraction identified them as weddelite in Crataegus pontica C. Koch, C. stevenii Polar., C. monogyna ssp. monogyna Jacq. in C. orientalis var. orientalis Pallas ex Bieb. both whewellite and weddelite crystals were found. Although there were some differences among the soluble and insoluble oxalate contents, they were not notable...
The community of elaterid larvae of three sites (field and two fallows), representing different stages of secondary succession, were studied using soil sampling from 1986 to 1993. All three sites were abandoned arable land: a field cultivated until 1991, a fallow I abandoned in 1986, and a fallow II abandoned about 1976. The fallow II was used as a meadow after abandonment and was regularly mown until...
In field tests replicated in 2004 and 2005, 32 cultivars of spring barley were assessed for resistance to Fusarium head blight (FHB) by single floret inoculation and spray inoculation with Fusarium culmorum (W. G. Smith) Sacc. It was found that the weather conditions in individual years affect to a large extent the progression of FHB and production of mycotoxin deoxynivalenol (DON). At the same time,...
Germplasm characterization is essential and molecular markers provide valuable information for breeding programs. Sequence-related amplified polymorphism (SRAP) and phenotypic markers were studied to determine diversity and relationships among 23 okra (Abelmoschus esculentus (L) Moench) genotypes. The 39 combinations of forward and reverse SRAP primers were used to evaluate the 21 Turkish and two...
Leaf blade parameters and leaf demography of Festuca pallens Host were studied in two types of dry grasslands. The field work was carried out in the Považský Inovec Mts (Western Carpathians) during 1993–1995. The permanent plot in the Poo badensis-Festucetum pallentis was located on a steep, strongly eroded S-facing slope covered with dolomite outcrops, scree and sparse vegetation (20%) dominated...
Two new pseudoscorpion species, Neobisium babinzub sp. n., and N. tarae sp. n. (Neobisiidae, Pseudoscorpiones), were collected in soil and leaf-litter on Mt. Stara Planina and Mt. Tara, Serbia, diagnosed and thoroughly illustrated. The main morphological characteristics of the two taxa clearly demonstrate their adaptation to life in soil.
Arknotrombium arknesianum gen. n., sp. n., Hauptmannia kotorensis sp. n., both from Montenegro, H. podorasensis sp. n. and Abrolophus pseudolongicollis kiejstuti subsp. n., both from Bosnia and Hercegovina are described. Leptus mariae Haitlinger is new to the fauna of Bulgaria, Leptus josifovi Beron is new for the fauna of Bosnia and Hercegovina, Erythraeus budapestensis Fain et Ripka is new for...
This paper deals with apical dominance using a dicotylar model obtained after decapitation of pea seedlings with two shoots — one dominant and the other inhibited. When the dominant shoot was decapitated the inhibited one is released from inhibition and after 24 to 72 h begins to grow. However, the levels of trans-zeatin and production of ethylene increase within 4 and 6 hours respectively after release...
The life cycle of Globodera rostochiensis pathotype Ro1 was studied under experimental conditions on selected potato cultivars (Korela, Albina, Vivaldi, Veronika, Vera, Monalisa, Victoria, Maranca, Désirée) in Slovakia during two growing seasons. Two peaks of second stage juveniles (J2) were found in the soil; the first peak three and four weeks after planting in the first and second year, respectively...
